ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY INVITE - 03/28/09
On Saturday March 28, 2009, 7 of Loyola’s Club Tennis members faced a bigger battle than tennis itself – THE WEATHER! Juniors Cam Burnett and Tsering Norbu, Sophomore Greta Brauer, and Freshmen Jeff Scott, Sarah Frankiewicz, Jessie Masch, and Haley Weigand all woke up at 7 a.m. to travel to Illinois State University. The team would face Illinois State, Southern Illinois, and Valpraiso (until they dropped out) in Normal, IL. While the trip looked promising and the team breakfast at Denny’s filled each with energy, the 7 players hit the courts for a solid warm-up. As the other two teams arrived, the Renowned Ramblers warmed up against SIU’s Men’s and Women’s Singles and ISU’s Men’s and Women’s Doubles.
In the mind’s of these dedicated student athletes, they foresaw earning two easy victories. However, as the first points had commenced, the rain came crashing down and created conditions unbearable to compete in. Even though it was a near 6-hour round trip, it was filled with great team bonding and even better laughs. From Tsering mixing honey in his tea to Jessie tuning into ‘boonies’ music to ISU’s prez not being competent to answer a phone call to Greta spending a half hour deciding how to only order French Toast to Sarah putting 37 layers on in the blistering cold to Jeff questioning why Cam doesn’t have directions to Haley believing Cam was from Cincinnati, and finally, to Pete, Andrew, and Dirk not waking up, the car ride had numerous jokes. Once again, any of the +50 club members that did not get an opportunity to represent LUC should appreciate Tsering, Jeff, Cam, Greta, Sarah, Jessie, and Haley for truly reflecting their devotion to the sport we all love – TENNIS!
